One of the most common questions I get from high school juniors and their parents is this: When is the best time to take senior photos? The short answer is that both summer and fall can be beautiful, but the most important step is booking your session early so you can secure the date and season you love most.

Today I’m sharing a few tips to help future seniors plan ahead and choose the perfect time for their senior session.

When to Book Your Senior Photos

I always recommend that seniors book their session about 2 to 3 months in advance. That said, it is never too early to reach out and start the conversation. Booking early gives you the best chance of securing your preferred date, especially during the busiest parts of the season.

Many of my seniors are balancing a lot between sports, school activities, jobs, and social events, so having your session on the calendar early helps everything run more smoothly.

Another reason to plan ahead is lighting. I schedule most sessions 1 to 2 hours before sunset to capture that dreamy golden hour glow. These time slots are limited each evening, so they tend to fill quickly once booking opens!

Fall Senior Sessions

Fall is the most popular season for senior photos, and it’s easy to see why!

The Pros

• Beautiful fall foliage and warm autumn colors
• Comfortable temperatures that are warm but not too hot
• Perfect for cozy outfits like sweaters, layers, and boots

The Cons

• This season books the fastest because it is so popular
• Weather can sometimes be unpredictable with rain or cloudy days
• Late fall sessions can become chilly pretty quickly

If you love fall colors and layered outfits, this season might be perfect for you. However, if you prefer warmer temperatures or summery outfits, you may want to consider a summer session instead.

Summer Senior Sessions

Summer sessions are actually one of my personal favorite times of year for senior photos! If you are worried about heat or humidity, an early fall session in September can be a great in-between option.

The Pros

• Bright, vibrant colors and lush greenery
• Beautiful sunsets and long golden hour light
• Flowers in bloom and lots of natural textures
• Fun outfit options like sundresses and lighter clothing

The Cons

• Temperatures can sometimes be hot or humid
• Humidity may affect hair or makeup for some seniors

When you fill out the contact form on my website, there is a section that asks you to share a little about yourself and what you are looking for in your senior portrait experience. This part is so helpful for me as I start planning your session.

I always encourage seniors to include details like… Activities you are involved in at school, things you enjoy outside of school, and what you love about the photos you see on my page.

Some seniors mention that they love golden hour light, open fields, flower gardens, or specific locations. Others tell me they are drawn to certain styles like wide scenic shots or more close-up portraits. Sharing those details helps me create a session that truly reflects you.
