Brooke and Zach absolutely nailed their engagement session, and today I’m featuring their photos as the perfect example while sharing some of my best tips on how to prepare for yours.
First things first, your engagement session is included in your wedding package. It is not just a bonus. It is an important part of the experience.
Why Engagement Sessions Matter
Trust me, I never want to feel like a stranger showing up on your wedding day. Your engagement session allows us to build a relationship, get comfortable with each other, and create trust before the big day.
Think of it as a “practice round”! You get to learn how I pose and direct, and I get to see how you naturally interact. By the time your wedding day arrives, we are able to work efficiently and confidently because you already know what to expect.
And let’s be honest, being in front of the camera can feel intimidating. I completely get it! That is why I guide you from head to toe. You will never be left wondering what to do with your hands or how to stand. My goal is to help you feel confident and relaxed so your photos feel natural and joyful.
Plus, these images are not just for fun. You can use them for your save the dates, your wedding website, shower decor, or even your guest book! They truly become part of your entire wedding story.
Planning Your Outfits
Outfits can truly elevate your session. Brooke and Zach did such a beautiful job coordinating their looks without matching.
My advice? Coordinate, do not match. Choose complementary colors rather than wearing the exact same tones. I love a neutral base paired with one soft accent color.
Avoid loud patterns and overly bold colors. They tend to distract and are not as timeless. Solid colors always photograph beautifully.
Movement is your best friend! Flowing dresses, fabrics that catch the wind, and layers that add dimension create stunning images. Try to avoid stiff fabrics that limit movement.
And always, always dress for the location! If we are shooting in a field or garden, lean into soft and romantic. If we are in the city, opt for something a little more polished and structured.
Timing & Light
Golden hour is always the goal! That soft, glowy light right before sunset is what gives your images that dreamy feel. The exact timing varies depending on the season, so trust me when I guide you on start time.
Your location also plays a huge role in lighting. Some spots lose sunlight earlier than others, so I always consider both the season and the setting when building your session timeline.
Tips for the Day Of
Try on your outfits ahead of time! Make sure everything fits well and that you love how your outfits look together. Move around in them to ensure you feel comfortable.
Steam or iron your clothes. Wrinkles do not edit out easily and can be distracting in photos. Clean your shoes, too! I know it sounds simple, but it makes a difference.
Consider professional hair and makeup. It photographs beautifully and helps you feel extra confident.
And most importantly, relax! Your engagement session should feel fun and easy. Brooke and Zach came in trusting the process, laughing through prompts, and just enjoying time together. That energy is what makes your photos come alive!
Your engagement session is the start of your wedding photography journey. It sets the tone, builds confidence, and allows us to create something beautiful together before the big day even arrives.
If you are one of my upcoming couples, I cannot wait for your turn. Let’s make some magic in front of the camera!
