One of the most common questions I get asked by seniors is, “What should I wear for my session?” And I totally get it – choosing outfits for your senior photos can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be! Your outfits should reflect who you are, make you feel confident, and complement your session location. So I’ve rounded up my top five outfit tips to help you plan with ease!
1) Determine Your Style
When choosing your outfits, think about where we’ll be shooting! Your style should work with the vibe of the location:
- City/Urban Setting: Think bold and chic – jumpsuits, trendy matching sets, structured blazers, and cool sneakers work perfectly in an edgy or downtown setting.
- Nature/Open Field: Romantic, flowy pieces shine here! Maxi dresses, lace details, light denim, and soft, neutral tones always pop beautifully against nature’s backdrop.
2) Grab Your Go-To Faves
This is your time to shine, so wear what makes you feel like the best version of YOU!
- A long flowy dress or skirt flatters every body type and gives us that dreamy, wind-swept movement in your photos. We LOVE movement!
- Or, go casual-cute with your favorite jeans and a flirty top – add cowboy boots, your favorite sneakers, or strappy sandals for personality. This combo is always a winner.
3) Add Variety to Your Outfits
I always recommend bringing at least two looks – one dressy and one casual – for the most variety in your gallery.
- Your dressy option could be a dress, skirt, romper, or jumpsuit – these pieces are universally flattering and photograph beautifully.
- For your second look, go with something more relaxed: jeans and a blouse, a cool graphic tee, or anything that screams “YOU.”
- When it comes to colors, I love a mix of neutrals (white, tan, black) and a pop of color or fun pattern. This combo gives you one timeless look and one trendy vibe – win-win!
4) Think About the Weather & Session Location
The season and setting play a huge role in how your outfits photograph:
- Spring/Summer: You’ll see lots of greenery, so whites, pastels, light denim, and pops of bright color work beautifully.
- Fall: Lean into richer tones like burgundy, navy, mustard, or forest green to match the warm fall palette.
- Also, please remember to dress for the weather! A cozy layered look always looks better than shivering in a sundress when it’s 40 degrees out. Comfort is key to feeling confident in front of the camera, I promise!
5) Don’t Be Afraid to Accessorize
Accessories and props can elevate your photos and show off your personality!
- Add simple accessories: Think bracelets, earrings, rings, hats, or a fun jacket.
- Paint your nails (and toes if you’re wearing sandals)! Stick with neutral shades since your hands will be in plenty of photos.
- Bring props that matter to you – college t-shirts, letterman jackets, flowers, coffee drinks, diplomas, even your pup! I love incorporating personal touches that tell your story.
I hope these outfit tips help take your senior photo outfits to the next level! No matter what you wear, the most important thing is that you feel comfortable and confident. Your senior photos are about celebrating everything that makes you uniquely you, so let’s have some fun with it!
